Another Pen-and-Ink Drawing from My Teens

Snippet of Pen-and-Ink Sketch Showing Backlit Face of Beautiful Girl

Following on from my previous post, you can see above and below a couple of closeups/snippets of another pen-and-ink drawing I created when I was in my late teens. The title of this piece is “Summer of Love“.

Because the subject is almost fully backlit, the challenge and allure for me was to show the shapes and forms of the face, and especially the body (for example, the armpit, the abdomen and the hip), DESPITE them being in very dark shadow.

The detail in the shadow of the original subject was really intriguing to me and I hope the result in the final drawing is similarly intriguing to others.

At the time I had a simple viewpoint about what I chose to create: if I found a subject aesthetic or curious or interesting enough that it “spoke” to me, then it might have the same effect on others.

I have the same viewpoint now. I feel I have succeeded if something I create is just simply appealing or, more profoundly, if it induces curiosity in the viewer or even stimulates a conversation.

Prints of this artwork, in various sizes, are now available in my online shop. ♥️
